Detailed Northern Tanzania Safari Route

Day 1 – Arrival in Tanzania

Arrival at:
✈️ Kilimanjaro International Airport

Transfer route:

Kilimanjaro International Airport
→ Drive west on A23 highway
→ Arrive in Arusha (main safari gateway town)

Distance: ~50 km
Driving time: ~1–1.5 hours

Most safaris overnight in Arusha before starting the circuit.


Day 2 – Arusha → Tarangire National Park

Route:

Arusha
→ South via Arusha–Babati Road (B144)
→ Pass Makuyuni junction
→ Continue to Tarangire National Park

Distance: ~120 km
Driving time: 2–3 hours

Highlights along route:

  • Maasai villages

  • Rift Valley landscapes

  • Baobab tree savannah

Overnight: Tarangire / Karatu area


Day 3 – Tarangire → Serengeti National Park

Long scenic drive through the highlands.

Route:

Tarangire
→ Back to Makuyuni
→ Climb into the Ngorongoro highlands
→ Pass Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate
→ Scenic stop at Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint
→ Continue via Naabi Hill Gate
→ Enter Serengeti National Park

Distance: ~280–320 km
Driving time: 6–8 hours (with game drives)

Overnight: Central Serengeti (Seronera region)


Day 4 – Serengeti Game Drives

Full day exploring Central / Western / Eastern Serengeti

Key wildlife regions:

  • Seronera Valley

  • Retina Hippo Pool

  • Moru Kopjes

  • Western Corridor plains

Driving mainly inside Serengeti park roads.


Day 5 – Serengeti Exploration

Continue exploring:

Possible areas:

  • Central Serengeti

  • Eastern plains (cheetah territory)

Game drives typically 80–150 km during the day.

Overnight: Serengeti lodge/camp.


Day 6 – Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater

→ Re-enter Ngorongoro Conservation Area
→ Drive to Ngorongoro Crater rim
→ Descend 600 m into the crater floor

Distance: ~145 km
Driving time: ~3–4 hours

  • Rhino viewing

Overnight: Karatu / Ngorongoro rim


Day 7 – Ngorongoro → Kilimanjaro Airport

Route:

Ngorongoro / Karatu
